Signs of autumn

Autumn is a time of transformation and change - many natural processes are triggered by the changing of temperature and shorter days.

Energy stored up from over the summer results in plants going to seed and the trees become full of berries and nuts. Leaves lose their colour as the nights get colder and destroy chlorophyll, resulting in the loss of the green colour we associate with summer.

Unusual fungi appear and transform by the day, while migratory birds arrive for the coming winter months. Insects’ metabolism slows as they either prepare to weather the winter or come to the end of their lives. Some animals, like our native hedgehog, are also preparing to hibernate and are busy choosing the perfect nesting spot.

Looking for inspiration on how to connect with wildlife this autumn? There are lots of wild ideas on how to support wildlife at home via our digital Wildlife Gardening Pack - it is FREE to download.
