Summer is a time of colour. By day, colourful wildlife zips and darts along the waterside in the form of hunting kingfishers and dragonflies. Butterflies flit between flower and reptiles bask on sun warmed bare earth. The activity carries on under cover of darkness too - bats sweep swiftly through the air and nightjars churr, while glow-worms adorn the night with their luminescent mating rituals.

Stafford Brooks started as a partnership project with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, National Highways, Stafford Borough Council, and The Environment Agency. Working together, this partnership created havens for wildlife to flourish across eight key sites in town. Thanks to funding from National highways, it has improved connectivity between habitats creating a nature recovery network in the county town.

Work in Stafford is continuing thanks to more funding, this time from the Environment Agency, with conservation taking place on Doxey Marshes Nature Reserve in summer 2026.
