Forest School blog post by Duncan Coleman - February 2019

As well as regular delivery of Forest School at Weston Road Academy in Stafford and through Strong Roots, Better Futures programme in Stoke, with the start of February, our busy spring and summer season of Forest School training and events is just round the corner.
We have a wide range events and courses in 2019 including;

ā€¢Ā Ā  Ā ā€œLevel 1 Award in Forest School Principles and Ethosā€ This course is an ideal starting point for those wanting to know more about Forest School, Itā€™s a great course to get to grips with what Forest School is and how it can benefit Ā your learners. We also get course participants to try their hand at and experience some typical Forest School activities, such as basic fire lighting, shelter building and safe tool use.

ā€¢Ā Ā  Ā ā€œLevel 3 Certificate for Forest School Leadersā€ This is the course that an individual needs to complete if they wish to deliver Forest School. Our course is a combination of theoretical work in the classroom and practical experience in the outdoors. We also include a two day Forest School first aid course.

  • This year we are also delivering funded Forest School Level 3 courses to over 40 teachers and teaching assistants in Stoke through our ā€œStrong Roots, Better Futuresā€ project. We will be delivering the Level 3 course to three cohorts of learners this spring and summer at our Westport Lake Visitor Centre and our Hem Heath Nature Reserve.
    Ā
  • Twice a year (spring and autumn) we also deliver Forest School CPD days. These days are an ideal opportunity for Forest School leaders and assistants, as well as those currently undertaking their Level 3 course to get together around a fire and share skills, activities and stories, as well as network with other Forest School practitioners in their area.

  • In June this year, we will also be delivering a Forest School taster day through Open College Network, West Midlands. This short one-day event is aimed at those looking to find out more about Forest School and thinking about undertaking an accredited course. During the day, we will discuss what Forest School is, Safe and best practice, the benefits of Forest School and how it can be embedded within your setting/location. We also get a chance to have a fire, use tools and experience Forest School in a natural woodland setting.
