Young people in Tamworth given opportunity to gain vital skills
Young people in Tamworth are being given an opportunity to develop critical skills for employment and engage with their local green spaces.
‘Skills for Social Action’ is a project being run in Tamworth by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust thanks to the #iwill fund. The #iwillfund provides funding to engage young people in social action such as volunteering.
The funding is giving young people aged 11-21 the opportunity to access free workshops to gain skills, and to take part in social action taster days in order to find out more about social action and volunteering in their local area.
Workshops are being offered to secondary schools and youth groups, and focus on developing teamwork, communication and leadership skills, which will help to build confidence in young people.
Social action taster days will also be offered for young people who want to start volunteering, but are not sure how. These will be held on Wild about Tamworth sites, and will not only help young people to meet new friends and learn new skills, but also to connect with their local green spaces.
Nicola Lynes, from Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said: “There is compelling evidence that young people who take part in social action initiatives develop extremely important skills which they can use both in the work place and in adulthood.
“As well as learning new skills, the sessions also allow for them to engage with the outdoors – something which is so important for self-esteem and well-being.
“We would be really pleased to hear from any local schools or groups in Tamworth who would like to provide the opportunity for youngsters to gain these skills.”
