With Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) transforming how nature recovery is delivered across England, practitioners, landowners and conservation organisations recently gathered at Chillington Estate in South Staffordshire to explore its real-world impact.

The event offered a unique opportunity to see a working habitat bank first-hand and hear from experts involved in turning policy requirements into meaningful outcomes for nature. From practical delivery to long-term stewardship, the event highlighted what it takes to make BNG work for both people and nature.

Hosted by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with landowner Charlie Giffard, the event brought together ecologists, land managers, developers and environmental professionals at the Chillington Habitat Bank, where Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is acting as the Responsible Body. Through expert presentations and a guided site tour, attendees explored the evolving BNG landscape, gaining practical insight into habitat bank development, long-term management and the delivery of measurable biodiversity gains. The visit also provided the opportunity to see habitat creation and enhancement works first-hand and discuss the practical realities of delivering BNG on the ground.

"As the BNG market continues to grow, it is essential that we focus on delivering genuine, long-term benefits for wildlife. The Chillington Habitat Bank demonstrates how landowners and conservation organisations can work together to create and manage habitats that support both biodiversity and wider nature recovery ambitions. Bringing people together to share learning and see these projects first-hand is crucial to building confidence and driving successful BNG implementation."

The event also provided a valuable forum for discussion and collaboration between the groups, helping to strengthen understanding of how high-quality BNG schemes can contribute to nature recovery at scale.

We would like to thank Charlie and the Chillington Estate team for hosting the event, and everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions. The strong level of interest highlighted the growing momentum behind BNG, and the important role habitat banks can play in delivering lasting benefits for wildlife and the environment.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust looks forward to sharing further examples of BNG best practice and practical delivery as it continues to develop.
