Nature has been pushed to the brink, but beavers can help turn things around.

We urgently need to raise £25,000 to introduce a family of beavers to Craddocks Moss next spring.

In 2019, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust purchased Craddocks Moss, a lowland raised bog on the edge of Newcastle-under-Lyme, with the vision of restoring it to a thriving wetland rich in wildlife.

The work needed here is challenging, but there is a natural solution: beavers. These incredible ecosystem engineers create wetlands which support wildlife, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce flooding, and improve water quality.

But before we can release the beavers into their new home, there’s a lot of work to do. We need an enclosure, equipment, and staff to monitor them.

We also plan to create footpaths and a viewing platform so you can visit and witness the work of these amazing creatures.

To make this happen, we need to raise £25,000 by Christmas Day 2025.

Hitting this target means we will have the full £172,000 needed to create the beaver's home before spring 2026 when we plan to release them.

About the project

Why does Craddocks Moss need beavers?

In the past, the peat here has been damaged and dried out by artificial drainage for timber crop planting. Since then, some work has been carried out to start restoring the peatland, but birch saplings and brambles are starting to take over.  If left unchecked, the peat will dry out and release more stored carbon into the atmosphere. We can’t let this happen.

What will the beavers do here?

Beavers will help to maintain a healthy wetland by eating saplings and creating dams to plug any gaps in the earth bunds (peat walls) to make sure water is kept in the bog. As well as preventing the release of carbon, this will create habitats for an abundance of wildlife such as dragonflies, bats, and birds.

How will my donation help?

Your generous gift will help to build a secure enclosure for the beavers, provide staff and equipment to monitor them, and support expert-led site management and evaluation for five years. It will also allow us to create footpaths and a viewing platform for visitors, so you can witness the work of these amazing creatures for yourself.

When will the beavers be released?

If we reach our target by Christmas, the beavers will be introduced in Spring 2026.
