Roaches recovery continues
Signs of life are beginning to show at one of Staffordshire’s most well-known nature reserves – less than two years after a fire devastated a large swathe of land.
Winter work at The Roaches
During winter 2024 into early 2025 a large number of larch trees were felled due to being diseased. The work was undertaken following instruction from the Forestry Commission, in an effort to contain the disease and ensure public safety.
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust celebrates 10 years of management at the iconic Roaches
On May 1 2013, the Trust began its 125-year lease of the Roaches, a magnificent 975-acre area on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

The silvery roach can be seen gathering in large shoals in lowland ponds, lakes and slow-flowing rivers. It is a member of the carp family and looks very similar to the dace, chub and rudd.
