Signs of summer

For wildlife watchers, summer is the season when insect life is most abundant and it si the best time to get to know moths, dragonflies, crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, bugs and all our other amazing minibeasts!

Summer is warm sunny days with a backing track of humming bees and insects. But it’s also summer thunderstorms and torrential rain, and all kinds of weather from droughts to floods!

Summer is also a time of colour. By day, colours zip and dart along the waterside as kingfishers and dragonflies go about their business of hunting. Butterflies flit between flowers, reptiles bask in the sun, and seabirds clamour on the cliffsides. The activity goes on under cover of darkness - bats sweep swiftly through the air, natterjacks chatter and nightjars churr, while glow-worms adorn the night with pinpricks of light.

See below for some summer highlights to look out for!
