Wildlife Info

We aim to develop this page over the coming months. Hopefully it will be filled with a host of Frequently Asked Questions and their answers.

In addition we will post some factsheets and other information as downloadable files.

Albino Tadpoles
Q. We have just had hundreds of tadpoles hatched out, and there seems to be a lot of Albino Tadpoles among them.  I have never seen them before, not in my pond anyway, is this unusual?
A. Albino frogsand tadpoles are fairly rare in comparison to albinism in mammals for example. The young will have had to have inherited altered genes that do not produce the usual amounts of the pigment melanin which would give them there more normal colour.
Both male and female amphibians must carry the defective albino gene to have offspring with albinism and in these circumstances there is a one-in-four chance of albino offspring being produced. For the tadpoles to the be true albinos they should have the distinctive pink eyes and associated off-white skin colouration.
