Warwickshire Moor (owned TBC)
Warwickshire Moor is considered a flagship site for wetland habitat restoration in Tamworth. Extensive work to create a series of pools and scrapes has led to vast improvements to habitats on the site.
Highlights
The Local Nature Reserve is part of a larger open space generally known as the Warwickshire Moor by local people.
Visit this easily accessible Local Nature Reserve and enjoy the peace and quiet while exploring the diverse range of habitats on the site.
Located off Moor Lane in Bolehall, close to the centre of Tamworth, Warwickshire Moor Local Nature Reserve covers approximately 5.74 hectares. There are both woodland and wetland habitats, along with heath and grassland areas, which are home to many species from foxes and other small mammals, to an abundance of bird and insect life.
Wetland habitat improvementsIn 2006, funding from the Tame Valley Project and Green Arc Partnership, provided the opportunity for the wetland habitat on the site to be improved. A twenty tonne digger and tractor dug out and opened up the main ditch which runs through the middle of the site, creating a series of pools and scrapes of various sizes. It took some time for the site to recover, but this extensive work has now improved the habitats on the site immeasurably.
This is the first wetland habitat work in Tamworth to take place on such a large scale, making the Moor a flagship site when similar work on other sites in the area is considered. |
Vital volunteering
The day to day maintenance of the site is carried out by the Friends of Warwickshire Moor – a group of local residents who carry out practical conservation tasks and events right throughout the year. For larger tasks, such as labour intensive reed management, the sea cadets have provided extra help enabling a real difference to be observed in just one task day.
BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) have also supported the group by installing a boardwalk and helping to improve accessibility to the site following the wetland restoration work.
