Get involved in caring for and improving Westport Lake at Friends group meeting

Nature enthusiasts are invited to join a group dedicated to caring for and improving a popular Stoke-on-Trent beauty spot.

The Friends of Westport Lake Visitor Centre was set up last year to help care for and improve Westport Lake by carrying out practical tasks such as creating reedbeds and wildflower areas, planting trees and shrubs, footpath maintenance, running community events and applying for funding.

At the next meeting, on Monday February 6 from 1pm – 3pm in Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Westport Lake Visitor Centre, the group will discuss their core aims and plan activities for the next six months. They will also appoint key roles including chairperson, treasurer and secretary.

Stepping Stones to Nature communities officer Karen Camara said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in the environment to get involved in making a difference to the area. The group provides a great way to keep fit and meet new people and it really benefits both wildlife and those who visit Westport Lake.”

The group was set up as part of a wider partnership project called Stepping Stones to Nature.  The funding for the project comes from Access to Nature, a scheme run by Natural England and funded by the Big Lottery Fund.  Stepping Stones to Nature provides lots of free opportunities for people and schools to visit the countryside.  To find out more about the project and opportunities available visit: www.staffs-wildlife.org.uk/page/stepping-stones-to-nature
