Naturally Art - outreach

Programme: Naturally Art

Suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2 and available as a half-day activity.

Naturally art is made up with a series of artistic activities which can take place either in your school grounds or within the classroom. The programme makes use of lots of natural materials like leaves, twigs and flowers, please inform us if you don’t have access to these within your school grounds. During the session children will look at shape, colour and how they can use nature to make art more interesting.

KS1

Natural Crowns – children collect natural materials to make a crown, they are encouraged to think about shape, colour and overall design before they stick things on.

Clay animals – using this natural material, which was once very abundant in Staffordshire, children design and make a native animal using other natural materials to add features.

Leaf rubbing animals – children are encouraged to collect different shaped leaves and use these to design an animal. A leaf rubbing is then taken on the design highlighting how shapes can be put together to create a new larger shape.

Cloud Pictures – children look at the clouds and let their imagination find pictures within them. They are encouraged to draw these pictures and share them with the rest of the class.

Land Art - Making use of the methods utilized by environmental artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, children work in groups to produce a piece of land artwork and create an outdoor art gallery.

Willow weaving – children use this ancient craft to make a small willow item to take home. Please note this activity requires good fine motor skills and may not be suitable for every group.

KS2

Natural Picture Frames – using square lashing children make their own natural picture frame from 4 sticks.

Natural Pictures – using natural dyes, flowers and mud children create a picture to go into their picture frame

Photographs – children work in pairs for this activity with one child being the photographer and the other the camera. The “photographer” takes the “camera” to a specific spot that they think would make a nice photo, the “camera” then has 5 seconds to look at the shot and then they have to go away and draw what they have seen.
