Programme: FANTASTIC FROGS
Suitable for Foundation Stage pupils and available as a half day programme
Fantastic Frogs gives children an insight into the world of water and creatures that live there. Children will investigate different water forms and the characteristics of them as well as exploring freshwater creatures and their life cycles.
ACTIVITY DETAILS
Fantastic frogs begins in the classroom with a discussion about water in the natural environment and differences between salt and fresh water. Children will think about how humans use water and how important it is for everyday life. Pupils are asked about what aquatic wildlife they have seen and what they expect to see today. Children go outside to explore different forms of water and the animals that live in it.
Guided by the session leader, children follow a trail with various activities being introduced along the way (not always in the order outlined below).
1. Water Bodies - Guided by the session leader children investigate different forms of water around the grounds. Through interactive activities pupils learn about the different characteristics of the water forms.
2. Float or sink? - Using the lake children investigate the floating properties of different natural objects are encouraged to predict if objects will float or sink before they test them.
3. Who lives here? - Through an exciting game, children explore which creatures live in the water and which live on land. Some discussion will follow which look at differences between aquatic and land animals.
4. Frog lifecycle - Children will listen to a story which explains the lifecycle of the frog from spawn to adult. Children will use drama to act out the life cycle and think about movement and feeding habits at each stage.
5. Survival of the fittest - Through a tag-based game children will investigate the idea that not all tadpoles will survive right through to adulthood.
6. Pond animals - Children investigate what other creatures live in the pond and look at difference between them.
