Communities
Through the Stepping Stones to Nature Project we offer lots of free opportunities for people to visit the countryside and get involved. The project covers Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire. Individuals and local groups can take part in activities like:
- Conservation Volunteering
- Workshops like hedge laying, making bird boxes, willow weaving
- Events / Family Fun Days
- Guided walks
- Conservation Volunteering Holidays in the Peak District
- Friends of Groups or Community Groups
- Mentorship Placements

Our regular volunteering groups include:
Stepping Stones Volunteer Group
Meets once a month on a Wednesday activities usuall run 10am to 1pm, we can pick up people from Westport Lake Visitor Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. The activities are varied and the group visits a different reserve or park each month, its a great way to learn a variety of skills and visit new places. Some of the places visited so far are RSPB Coombes Valley, Wetley Moor Common, Warslow Moor, Hem Heath Nature Reserve, Apedale Country Park, and many more...

Westport Lake Conservation Volunteers
Meets onces a month on a Tuesday to help look after Westport Lake doing practical conservation work e.g. planting wildflowers, trees and shrubs, making planters, habitat management, path work. Suitable for all abilities, no experience needed.

Westport Lake Community Volunteers (Formally Friends of Westport Lake)
This is a new group of local people who want to help to improve Westport Lake Country Park. The group meets regularly to plan activities and events and is affiliated to SWT. The next general meeting is on Mon 28th May 12.30-2.30pm, meeting at the Visitor Centre. At this meeting people will be voted into positions of Secretary, Co-ordinator, Tresurer and Events Officer.

Coming soon - Friends of Cecilly Brook and Hales Hall Pool - Cheadle
A new group will be starting soon to help look after, survey and improve Cecilly Brook and Hales Hall Pool in Cheadle. These Local Nature Reserves are owned by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and as part of the Stepping Stones Project, SWT will be working with the council to help set up this new group. There will be an information for any one interested in finding out more about the group on Wed 23rd May - 6.30pm at Cheadle Guildhall, it will include a guided walk around the sites.
