Bushcraft Sheet

Programme: Bushcraft

Suitable for Key Stages 2 and 3 and available as a half-day activity.

This session brings a taste of Ray Mears into your school grounds and gives your students the chance to try out lots of new skills. The activities undertaken will depend on the size and age of the group and the length of the session. The students will be split into working groups of about 5 and given a scenario to work through which will form the basis of their survival session. These scenarios will be similar but will allow students to have some variation in what they do. For example “you have been stranded in the rainforest and much make a shelter that is super waterproof but gives you a way of collecting rainwater to drink.”
Activity Outline
During the session each group will have the chance to do most of the activities outlined below. In a typical session we would expect to cover at least 3 of the activities.

Knot tying – students will be taught a couple of useful knots which they might be able to use later in the session when building their shelters.

Shelter building – pupils will work through their scenario and build a shelter which will keep them dry and warm should they have to spend the night outside. They will be given certain materials such as tarpaulins and string but will be encouraged to also use natural materials.

Fire lighting – each pupil will light a small fire using a flint and steel. This will lead into building a larger whole group fire and doing some outdoor cooking such as marshmallows.

Track and trails – in their groups students will lay a trail using traditional route marking signs and try to follow each others to find the treasure.

Survival Bag – using their given scenario pupils will think about what they would need in a survival bag should they be stranded and what would be practical to carry with them.
