Tamworth's Big Tree Plant

The Big Tree Plant is a national campaign that helps people and communities across England to plant more trees where they live and work with a target to plant 1 million additional trees by April 2015.

In 2011 the Wild about Tamworth Partnership won more than £12,800 funding from The Big Tree Plant Campaign to plant 5,000 trees on Local Nature Reserves and open spaces across Tamworth Borough.

A series of tree planting sessions have been planned for the planting seasons of 2011/12 and 2012/13 and so far over 100 people have been involved in the Big Tree Plant in Tamworth.

Volunteers from the local community around the Bumpy, Glascote (Burgess Nature Park) and a group of youngsters from Two Rivers School have planted over 300 trees to form a boundary woodland feature to enhance the site and increase connectivity for biodiversity.

In addition, pupils from Stoneydelph Primary School helped out on a cold December morning to continue this planting at a second location on the site.

Tamworth volunteers also had the opportunity to take part in a Tree Care Day in December at Wigginton Park where they learned about tree planting techniques and considerations and aftercare for newly planted trees such as the use of tree stakes and guards, pruning and woodland management.

The community tree planting session at Wigginton Park on 15th January was a great success.  Volunteers helped to plant around 150 trees alongside the main pathway.  Once completed, this will create a valuable wildlife corridor across the site for small mammals.
