Trust celebrates breeding first at wetland oasis

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is celebrating a first for Doxey Marshes nature reserve in Stafford after a pair of Shelduck successfully hatched a brood of seven ducklings.

The ducklings are the first to be born at any of the Wildlife Trust’s 30 nature reserves in Staffordshire.

Doxey Marshes Warden, Scott Petrek said: “Shelduck are becoming an increasingly common species in inland waters during winter and passage periods, but records for successful breeding pairs are still very scarce in the West Midlands, so this is wonderful news.

“This first pair of breeding Shelduck are now one of over 80 species of bird which breed on Doxey Marshes, with other important species including Lapwing, Sedge Warbler and Water Rail.”

The news first broke on the Trust’s Twitter page, which keeps people up to date with all the latest news, events and wildlife sightings from around its nature reserves in Staffordshire. You can become a follower of the page by searching for SWTReserves on Twitter.
